Healing Through Connection

What is a Social Emotional Assessment?

A social-emotional assessment is an evaluation that helps understand a child’s emotional wellbeing, social skills, and ability to manage feelings and relationships. It explores how a child experiences, expresses, and regulates emotions, as well as how they interact with others at home, school, and in the community.

Purpose
The goal of a social-emotional assessment is to identify strengths and challenges in areas such as emotional regulation, coping skills, self-esteem, social understanding, and relationships. It helps determine whether difficulties are part of typical development or may be related to conditions such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, or autism spectrum disorder.

What It Involves
A social-emotional assessment may include:

  • Parent and teacher interviews to gather observations about the child’s behaviour, mood, and social interactions.
  • Child interviews or play-based activities to understand how the child perceives and expresses emotions.
  • Standardized questionnaires and rating scales completed by parents, teachers, and sometimes the child, to measure emotional and behavioural functioning.
  • Behavioural observations in structured and unstructured settings to see how the child manages transitions, frustration, and peer interactions.

What It Can Identify
This type of assessment can help identify:

  • Emotional regulation difficulties
  • Anxiety or mood concerns
  • Social skill challenges
  • Behavioural or adjustment issues
  • Underlying stressors affecting wellbeing or school performance

Outcome
Families receive a comprehensive report summarizing findings and recommendations. These may include strategies for emotional regulation, social skills development, and support at home or school.

A social-emotional assessment provides valuable insight into a child’s inner world—helping caregivers and educators better understand their needs and support their emotional growth and resilience.
